ICE OASIS SKATING SCHOOL 

Class Curriculum

The Ice Oasis Skating School offers excellent general ice skating, starter hockey, and figure skating developmental programs. Skaters enjoy a wide variety of classes for beginner through advanced levels. Achievement ribbons, competitions, shows, and various social events encourage participation from the young to the young at heart. Skills learned in each class are listed with the class descriptions. Listed below is a general week-by-week curriculum for the beginner classes.

  • First week, meet instructor by the door to the ice, learn safety precautions, introduce skills, ensure students are in correct class.

  • Second week, meet instructor on the ice in class area. Continue to introduce skills, work on skill development.

  • Remaining weeks, meet instructor on the ice in class area. Continue skill development.

  • Last week of the series, Evaluations take place. Achievement ribbons awarded.

 

Class Descriptions

Classes for Beginners/Classes for Adults

 

NEW TO SKATING — Beginner Classes for all ages:

Tot Level 1  for ages 3 to 5 years

  • Standing, proper way to fall, proper way to get up, marching in place, marching while moving, 2-foot jump in place, forward swizzle in place, moving swizzle.  Skaters are normally divided into separate classes based on skill level, if enrollment warrants.

  • No previous skating experience needed.

Tot Level 2 for ages 3 to 5 years

  • Preparation for beginning stroke, preparation for snowplow stop, forward swizzle, backward swizzle, backward wiggle, one foot glides, T-position and push. 

  • Skaters must have passed Tot 1 to enroll in this class.

  • This class prepares skaters for Beginning 1.

Beginning 1, for ages 6 to 12 years

  • Standing, proper way to fall, proper way to get up, marching in place, marching while moving, 2-foot jump in place, intro to moving swizzle, preparation for snowplow stop, intro to backward swizzle, backward wiggle, intro to one foot glides.

  • No previous skating experience needed for ages 6-15.

  • Skaters under age 5 must have been promoted from Tot 2.

Adult Beginning , for ages 16 & up

  • Equivalent to Beginner 1 (listed above), and Pre-Alpha (listed below).

  • No previous skating experience needed.

Parent & Me - one child ages 3-5 & one parent/guardian

  • Standing, proper way to fall, proper way to get up, marching in place, marching while moving, 2-foot jump in place, forward swizzle in place, moving swizzle.  This is an encouragement class to enable the child to gain confidence.

  • No previous skating experience needed.

  • This class prepares child for Tot 1.

NEW TO HOCKEY

Starter Hockey

  • Youth & Adult.  Basic skills of hockey skating.  No sticks or pucks used in class.

  • Skaters must have completed Pre-Alpha or Beginning Adult to enroll.

LEARN TO SKATE PROGRAM

Pre-Alpha

  • Two foot glides, one foot glides, forward swizzles, backward swizzles, backward wiggle.

  • Skaters must have been promoted from Beginning 1.

  • Skaters completing this level may continue, or enter Starter Hockey.

Alpha

  • Forward Stroking, forward crossovers, one-foot snowplow stop.

  • Skaters must have passed Pre-Alpha to enroll.

Beta

  • Backward Stroking, Backward Crossovers, T-Stops.

  • Skaters must have passed Alpha to enroll.

Gamma

  • Outside three turns, inside Mohawks, hockey stops.

  • Skaters must have passed Beta to enroll.

Coffee Club, (18 & over)

  • Pre-Alpha through Delta 2, based on enrollment. 

Delta 1

  • Inside three turns, forward outside and inside edges, shoot the duck, lunge, bunny hop.

  • Skaters must have passed Gamma to enroll. 

Delta 2 (Pre-Freestyle)

  • Back outside and inside edges, Mohawk combination, intro to waltz jump, two foot spin and spiral.

  • Skaters must have passed Delta 1 to enroll.

Freestyle Workshop

  • Jumps, spins, edgework and footwork.  The Wednesday class covers Freestyle 1-5 and the Saturday class covers Freestyle 1-6.

  • Skaters must have passed Delta 2 (Pre-Freestyle) to enroll.

  • 45 minute class during the show series.

Axel Class

  • Intensive instruction on the axel, including walk-throughs, jump and spin exercises, and harness exercises.

  • Skaters must have passed Freestyle 4 and be able to land a lutz jump to enroll.

  • Class may be taken with Freestyle Workshop.  (Workshop price will be adjusted accordingly).

Stroking Class

  • Emphasis placed on proper stroking technique, and endurance.

  • For Gamma level and above.

Intermediate Power Class

  • Develop power, technique & endurance.

  • Must be able to land a flip jump to enter class.

Competitor’s Power Class

  • High energy class to develop power, presentation, endurance. Must have passed Preliminary Moves in the Field test or ISI Freestyle 7.

  • Skaters must have instructor or director approval to enroll.

Flow & Movement

  • Develop edge control & expression.  15-20 minutes of class devoted to figures, remainder to edge/movement exercises.

  • Skaters must have passed Freestyle 1 or Pre-Preliminary to enroll.

Theatre On Ice Team

  • Entrance to this class is by audition and instructor / director approval ONLY.

  • Intro to Theatre Class -- Skaters must be at Delta level or above to take this class that works on the Fundamentals of Theatre On Ice

Youth or Adult Ice Dance

  • Learn basics of ice dancing.  Develops carriage, edge quality, extension, and rhythm.

  • Skaters must have passed Delta to enroll.

Intermediate ADULT, (16 & over)

  • Equivalent to Alpha, Beta, Gamma listed above.

Advanced ADULT Workshop, (16 & over)

  • Equivalent to Gamma, Delta 1, Delta 2 listed above.  Also footwork & stroking exercises.

  • 60 minute class.

ADULT Figure Class

  • Class for skaters 18 & over, teaching basic techniques of compulsory figures.

  • Skaters must have passed Delta to enroll.

ADULT Freestyle Workshop, (16 & over)

  • Jumps, spins, and gliding maneuvers from the various freestyle test levels.  Students progress at their own pace.

  • Skaters must have passed Delta or the equivalent to enroll.

Benefits for NON-CLUB MEMBERS

  • Most classes (except show classes & practice session) receive:

  • A punch card with either 4 free public sessions or 3 free freestyle sessions.  (Approximately a $30.00 value). (Public session passes given unless freestyle passes are requested.)

  • Free skate rental during class, and when using 4 free public sessions.

  • Evaluations on the last day of class with achievement ribbons.

  • Punch Cards are valid only through the last class of this series.

  • Make-up classes will not occur during the first or last week of the class series.

  • Sorry, no carry-overs, pro-rated classes, or refunds.
